Notes: I have a collection of translations of the poems of the French surrealist Paul Eluard. One evening I was reading from that collection and something I read there led me to make several sketches leading to the image I ended up engraving. At the time, the poem which provided the impetus for the image and also a title seemed so self-evident that I didn't make note of it. Yet several months later, when the edition was done, I couldn't figure out which poem I had read, or what that "obvious" title was.
After contemplating what I had done I arrived at the title "Schema". I was thinking about how a schematic of a machine, model or process shows how the pieces fit together. I saw the image as a schematic of a mythopoeic operation "exploded" as it were.
